DescriptionThis class aims at providing practitioners with an introductory understanding of Western Pain mechanisms, contemporary understanding of pain management, critical issues (epidemics of substance abuse), and emerging understanding of the use of non-pharmacological approaches. Through the class, the student will review pain physiology and logic of pharmacological treatments. He or she will further nuance the understanding of side effects, issues in pain education and pain management. Finally, the student will be better prepared to contemplate non-pharmacological approaches while being conversant in the Western medical model. Assessing pain using adequate scales will be covered.
